Designation as an Eligible Institution under Title III and Title V Programs

According to the US Department of Education, “A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is defined as an institution of higher education that

  1. is an eligible institution; and
  2. has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application.”

Each of the five New Mexico State University campuses (Alamogordo, Carlsbdad, Doña Ana, Grants, and Las Cruces) are considered Hispanic Serving Institutions.

Subject to the specific program requirements, each institution may apply for a new grant under any of the Title III programs and the Title V, Hispanic-Serving Institutions Programs.

In past years, eligibility letters are made available in February for Main campus, and in April for the branch campuses. If any of the campuses were deemed eligible by the US Department of Education, the letters were available earlier. In 2020, eligibility letters were made available immediately for all campuses upon completing the Eligibility Application due January 31st and meeting the application criteria. As in past years if any of the campuses were deemed eligible by the US Department of Education, the Eligibility Applications were not required and letters were available earlier. And, campuses not deemed eligible with the Eligibility Application had to further submit a Waiver Application and wait for approval/not from the US Department of Education.
